Artemide

History

Artemide was founded in 1960 in Milan by Ernesto Gismondi — a physicist by training and an architect by calling. From its earliest years the brand was built around the idea Gismondi articulated as "The Human Light": light not as a technical element, but as an environment that shapes the conditions for human life and work.

The key icons emerged during the Italian design renaissance. Richard Sapper's Tizio (1972) — a desk lamp on a counterbalanced arm with full articulation, conducting current through the arm itself without an external wire — redefined what task lighting could be. Michele De Lucchi's Tolomeo (1987) — an articulated lamp in polished aluminium — became one of the best-selling designer luminaires in history and entered the permanent collection of MoMA. Nesso (Girard Awada, 1965), Castore (Vico Magistretti, 1967), Pirce (Gui Bon Beron, 2008) — each of these pieces remains in production to this day.

In the 2010s Artemide opened its architectural division as a standalone business: recessed systems, linear lighting, tracks with DALI and Casambi. Simultaneously the Alphabet of Light range by Roshna Andilani appeared — modular luminous letters and geometric configurations that became a tool for interior installations.
