History
Moooi was founded in 2001 in Amsterdam by Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers. The name is a deliberate misspelling of the Dutch «mooi» (beautiful): the extra «o» symbolises an excess that goes beyond the norm. The brand's manifesto — «a brand that gives life to products that were not supposed to exist» — defines the selection criteria: if a piece could be imagined in a standard catalogue, it has no place at Moooi.
The first brand collections broke established norms: Horse Lamp (a floor-lamp horse) became a media event; Random Light made from epoxy resin and fibre was a philosophical statement about lighting. In the 2010s Moooi expanded its range: rugs with photographic prints (the A Life Extraordinary collection), fabrics and wallcoverings appeared. Today the brand exhibits at the Milan Furniture Fair with narrative installations that become independent cultural events.
Iconic Collections
Random Light (Bertjan Pot, 2002) — a pendant luminaire in the form of a sphere made from fine fibre and epoxy resin. Each piece is unique: the fibre is wound around a balloon, which is then removed — so the form is always slightly different. Random Light became one of the symbols of "post-minimalist" design of the 2000s.
Heracleum (Bertjan Pot, 2013) — a pendant system of LED "petals" on flexible branches. The form references the hogweed plant; LED sources are located at the branch nodes, creating an effect of bioluminescence. Heracleum II and Heracleum Small are available in several sizes.
Horse Lamp (Marcel Wanders, 2006) — a half-life-size polyurethane horse floor lamp. A provocative gesture that became an icon: Horse Lamp appears regularly in lists of "the most recognisable design objects".
Blow Away Vase (Front Design, 2008) — a thin porcelain vase simulating the form of a classic vase at the moment of destruction by a gust of wind. Creation technique: 3D modelling of "destruction", then casting in porcelain.
