History
Kartell was founded in 1949 by Giulio Castelli in Milan. An engineer by education, Castelli saw in the polymer materials of the post-war chemical industry an opportunity for a revolution in the production of everyday objects. The first products — automotive accessories and kitchen utensils in plastic — laid the company's technological foundation. In 1963 Kartell created the first Italian furniture piece in plastic; in 1999 — the world's first transparent polycarbonate chair (La Marie, Philippe Starck).
Kartell's collaboration with Starck, which began in the 1990s, brought the brand to global recognition: Louis Ghost (2002) — a throne-like chair in transparent polycarbonate — became the best-selling designer chair in history. Over seven decades Kartell has collaborated with more than 150 designers: Antonio Citterio, Patricia Urquiola, Ferruccio Laviani, Vico Magistretti. Today the company produces furniture, lighting and accessories, exporting to more than 60 countries.
Iconic Collections
Louis Ghost (Philippe Starck, 2002) — an armchair in the form of a Louis XVI chair, executed in monolithic polycarbonate. An ironic collision of baroque form and ultra-contemporary material. The transparent version allows the piece to literally "disappear" into the interior. The best-selling chair in design history.
Masters (Philippe Starck, 2009) — a chair whose backrest combines the silhouettes of three classic chairs: Saarinen Tulip, Eames DSR and Jacobsen Series 7. Cultural quotation as form.
Componibili (Anna Castelli Ferrieri, 1969) — modular cylindrical ABS storage containers. One of the first design objects to enter the permanent collection of MoMA. Still in production today.
Bourgie (Ferruccio Laviani, 2004) — a table lamp in the form of a baroque candelabra in transparent polycarbonate. Bourgie is one of Kartell's most recognisable luminaires; available in transparent, smoked, gold and black.
