History
Flexform was founded in 1959 in Meda (Lombardy) as a small family upholstery manufacturer. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s the company developed within the Brianza furniture industry, supplying high-quality pieces for the Italian market. A decisive turn came in the 1980s when Flexform began its collaboration with Antonio Citterio — an architect and designer whose aesthetic aligned with the brand's values: minimalism without austerity, quality without ostentation.
The Flexform–Citterio partnership proved one of the most productive in Italian design: over four decades of collaboration, the Groundpiece and Cestone sofas, GFLO, the Gary and Wingtip armchairs emerged — pieces that became benchmarks for the entire premium upholstery category. Today Flexform remains a family company: the third generation maintains production in Meda, and all key operations — from fabric cutting to frame assembly — are performed in-house.
Iconic Collections
Groundpiece (Antonio Citterio) — a corner modular sofa on a low metal base. The concept of "furniture floating above the floor", which Citterio had been developing since the late 1990s, is realised here most consistently: the sofa visually does not touch the space, creating a sense of lightness at maximum comfort. Groundpiece is one of the most widely reproduced silhouettes in the segment.
Cestone (Antonio Citterio) — a sofa with a woven stainless steel base resembling a basket. Citterio deliberately disrupted the familiar logic of "soft" furniture by introducing an architectural frame element as a decorative constant.
Mood (Antonio Citterio) — a low upholstered furniture system with emphasis on horizontality and a calm character of forms. Mood scales easily from a two-seater sofa to a configuration for a large living room.
Gary (Antonio Citterio) — an armchair with distinctive "winged" armrests in painted metal. The chair's structure reads through the upholstery — which for Flexform is a point of principle.
