History
Cassina was founded in 1927 by brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina in Meda — a town at the heart of Brianza, the Italian region where a tradition of high-quality furniture manufacturing had developed over centuries. In the first decades the company produced bespoke furniture for shipping companies and hotels; the quality of workmanship and precision with materials established a reputation that endures to this day.
The turning point came in 1956: Cassina concluded an agreement with Gio Ponti for production of the iconic Superleggera chair. In 1964 the brand became the first Italian manufacturer to receive a licence to reproduce the archival projects of Le Corbusier — and today the LC2 armchair, LC3 sofa and LC4 chaise longue are produced from original drawings of the 1920s–1930s. Subsequently Cassina acquired rights to the heritage of Charlotte Perriand, Gerrit Rietveld, Vico Magistretti and other architects of the twentieth century. Alongside this, the company develops a contemporary line: collaborations with Patricia Urquiola, Piero Lissoni, Jaime Hayon and Studio Neri&Hu keep the brand relevant for the current generation of designers.

LC2 and LC3 (Le Corbusier, 1928) — armchair and sofa with metal frame and leather or fabric cushions. The archetype of modernist seating, still produced from original drawings and remaining one of the most recognisable furniture pieces of the twentieth century.
Maralunga (Vico Magistretti, 1973) — sofa with adjustable headrests, the first furniture design in history to realise the idea of a "transforming sofa" without mechanical devices. Red Dot Lifetime Award and MoMA permanent collection.
637 Utrecht (Gerrit Rietveld, 1935) — armchair with a deconstructed form that became an icon of Dutch De Stijl. Cassina has produced it under licence since 1973.
